Suspect in Berbice River murder arrested
The man accused of brutally chopping two of his fellow villagers at a shop up the Berbice River has since been arrested following an intelligence led operation at about 6:00 hours today.
He was accused of chopping 23 year old Selmon King to death while chopping King’s cousin, 18 year old Shane Osborne about the body, severing one of his arms in the process.
When contacted, Regional Commander, Boodnarine Persaud confirmed the arrest and noted that the suspect was arrested with no incident and that he is currently at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam assisting with the investigation.
While providing an update on his son’s condition, Vanwest Osborne told MTV News Update that his son who was admitted in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital had to be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital late yesterday afternoon. He said family members were informed that the doctors at the New Amsterdam Hospital informed them that they can no longer deal with the case as the teen’s condition was deteriorating.
According to information received, there was a wedding celebration in the area and the deceased and his cousin left to visit a friend’s home where they began imbibing. While there they witnessed an argument between the suspect and two other males who were arguing over the ownership of a cutlass.
As a consequence, Osborne intervened and the suspect pushed him into a canal where he attacked him with a cutlass and dealt him several chops about his body severing his left hand in the process. As he began to scream in pain, his cousin King rushed to his defence but he too was attacked and chopped about the body. He collapsed and died before being taken to the Hospital.
Both men were taken to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital where King was pronounced dead by a doctor.
Investigations are ongoing.
