Taxi driver, 36, convicted of raping 12-year-old

Convicted rapist: Feroz Shakeer

A 36-year-old taxi driver convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl has been remanded to prison pending sentencing, which is slated for July 15.

Upon his indictment, Feroz Shakeer, who was on trial before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Sexual Offences Court, had denied the charge when it was read to him. The charge states that on December 3, 2015, he sexually penetrated the girl.

Attorneys-at-Law George Thomas and Madan Kissoon represented him. State Counsel Ciceila Corbin appeared for the prosecution.

Media reports are that Shakeer picked up the victim, her cousin, and two other school children from the G3 Mall located at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on the day in question.

He then dropped off the two children, leaving the victim and her cousin in the vehicle. He then drove to an area in Diamond, where he raped the girl.
