Graduates of the Cyril Potter College of Education will now receive their permanent certificates immediately upon completion of their training. This move will take years of waiting off the list. The certificate distribution was halted previously.

However, that is about to change as the Education Ministry will now recommence the issuance of those certificates, says Education Minister Priya Manickchand.

Minister Manickchand while speaking to reporters at the sidelines of an event on Wednesday posited that an announcement will be made shortly on how past teacher graduates can acquire their certificates.

A permanent certificate is a document which highlights that an individual possesses the qualities and skills to deliver quality education to the sector and its beneficiaries (the students).

Speaking on the topic of the credibility of the certificate, she explained that “the teacher certificate in Guyana is not only internationally recognised, it is coveted.”

Manickchand who served as Education Minister for a number of years also maintains that “teachers have always performed well locally as well as overseas.”

In the meanwhile, the Education Minister says that over 5000 applications have been received this year for the Cyril Potter College of Education which shows that there is keen interest in the Education sector. She also stressed again the importance of having every teacher trained.

“While we have had untrained teachers who have done very well and are renowned in the country and elsewhere it is more likely that a teacher will perform better in the classroom and have a greater quality output if that teacher is trained to teach. So not only that they know the content but they understand how to apply that content effectively so that children can learn and themselves apply it in their lives.”

Additionally pre-service teachers who join the CPCE will also benefit from stipends.
