A 17-year-old armed robbery suspect was fatally shot during a robbery attempt on Aubrey Barker Road, Georgetown, on Friday night.

Dead is Carl Rolland Reid, called ‘Carloo Reid,’ a 17-year-old of Tucville Squatting Area.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a statement on Saturday, said that the incident occurred at about 21:10h.

According to the Police Force, the victims, a 45-year-old food vendor from Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD), and her 15-year-old daughter were waiting for transportation at the junction of Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt, when two armed men approached them on a motorcycle bearing registration number CL 7753.

Reid, along with his accomplice, demanded that the victims hand over their belongings at gunpoint.

The items stolen included two cell phones valued at $65,000 and $200,000, respectively, two handbags, and cash totalling $16,000. The bandits also took a gold chain valued at $35,000.

A 30-year-old Supernumerary Constable, who was on duty guarding a nearby Chinese supermarket, intervened.

According to reports, as the constable stepped out of his guard hut, one of the suspects fired four shots in his direction.

The constable returned fire, discharging all 15 rounds in his firearm and striking Reid multiple times. Reid collapsed in the middle of the road and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second suspect fled westward on the motorcycle but was later spotted by police anti-crime patrol in Festival City.

After a chase, the suspect abandoned the motorcycle and escaped on foot through an alleyway. The bike is now lodged at the East La Penitence Police Station.

A subsequent search of Reid’s body revealed one of the stolen cell phones and a black toy gun. Seven spent 9mm shells were recovered from the scene. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area. The investigation is ongoing.
