Teen motorcyclist who overtook several vehicles died in collision with car


A 17-year-old motorcyclist met his demise on Saturday after he allegedly collided with a motor car at the intersection of Amelia’s Ward Public Road and Toucan Drive in Linden.


The dead teen has been identified as Stephen Burnett of Lot 5946 Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden.

The accident, which occurred at about 14:00h, involved motor car PAC 9289, driven by a 31-year-old female and motorcycle CM 971, ridden by Burnett.


According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the motor car was proceeding west on the southern drive lane of Amelia’s Ward Public Road. As the vehicle approached the intersection, the driver indicated her intention to turn north into Toucan Drive.


During the turn, Burnett, who was travelling in the same direction at a high speed and without a safety helmet, attempted to overtake a line of vehicles, Police said.


As a result, he collided with the right-side front door and the front windshield of the car. The impact caused Burnett to fall onto the roadway, sustaining severe injuries.


Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported both Burnett and the injured driver to the Linden Hospital Complex. However, Burnett was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the car sustained injuries to her neck and body. She received treatment at the hospital and was admitted for further care. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
