Teen who robbed man on Water St says he was under the influence of alcohol
Kevin Charles, 19, who has no fixed place of abode, was remanded to prison after he confessed to robbing a man on Water Street, Georgetown, last month.
During his appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Charles admitted to the armed robbery charge with an explanation.
He admitted that while armed with a knife on November 30, 2024, on Water Street, Georgetown, he robbed Davindra Singh while under the influence of alcohol.
“I was under the influence of alcohol, and I robbed the man. I ain’t do he nothing. I just hold he by he shirt,” Charles explained in court.
The teen, who has been living on the streets since the age of 14, said he acted with an accomplice, Dominique Eastman, a resident of Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
Together, they stole Singh’s Samsung phone, a wallet, and cash totalling $57,000. Charles claimed the phone and wallet were returned to the victim but admitted to spending the stolen money, disputing the victim’s claim of $10,000 and saying only $6,000 was taken.
During the hearing, Charles detailed his difficult life circumstances, revealing that his mother is an alcoholic and his father is bedridden.
Magistrate McGusty ordered a probation report to assess Charles’ background, though she noted that the report would be delayed due to the Christmas season.
Citing Charles’ guilty plea, lack of a stable address, and the delay in obtaining the report, the magistrate remanded him to prison until January 3, 2025.
This incident is not Charles’ first encounter with the law. In February, he and his alleged accomplice were charged for a similar robbery on Water Street involving an iPhone and cash.
