On Monday, President Irfaan Ali announced massive increases in the salaries for doctors, nurses, and allied health workers.

While workers in the health sector were very pleased with this, employees in other sectors raised questions on whether they too would benefit from higher wages.

President Irfaan Ali addressed these frustrations by urging patience; “Every sector of employees, their time will come.”

“Everything is done in a very holistic way. We have to understand the functionality of the economy. Every category of workers will be addressed. We are starting from critical areas where there are great anomalies. That’s how we have started and we are progressing well.”

He boasted of the Government’s efforts to improve the welfare for all Guyanese beyond “just” salary. This includes plans to bring down the cost of electricity by half, improve quality of infrastructure, improve the quality of healthcare services and bringing treated water to everyone on the coast.

The Head of State placed special emphasis on teachers and their value to society, clarifying that they are a high priority in his administration.

“I value the work of teachers tremendously. Teachers are an important asset to our country. My own parents were teachers so no one has to tell me the value of teachers. Their entire life was spent in the teaching and education profession. The day for teachers will come, as I said its progressive. It’s a holistic approach.”

Just last month, the President announced an eight percent across-the-board retroactive increase to public servants, teachers, members of the disciplined services, constitutional office holders, as well as government pensioners.

There was also an adjustment to the salaries of junior ranks of the Police Force, Prison Service, Fire Service
