Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall has assured Toshaos and Deputy Toshaos they will receive their increased stipends, later this month. This payout will be done retroactively.
APNU+AFC Member of Parliament, Ganesh Mahipaul had recently questioned why the stipend was not paid out but Dharamlall assured the stipend will be paid as promised.
“The stipend is being processed right now […] they will receive it during the course of this month,” Dharamlall said.
The Local Government Minister reminded, the PPP/C Government is one to keep its promises and agreeing with this was Chairman of the National Toshaos Council Derick John, who related the increased stipends will be of great benefit.
“People have to understand that the President has made an announcement at the conference so it’s a work in progress […] so very soon we will see Toshaos receiving their increased stipend,” John said.
In July, at the National Toshaos Conference, President Irfaan Ali announced a 50% increase on stipends for Toshaos and Deputy Toshaos.
The stipend for Toshaos was $30,000 but with the increase it will now be $45,000 while the Deputy Toshaos will now receive $30,000. The Deputy Toshaos previously received $20,000.
Amerindian villages and Regional councillors also received an increased stipend. Their new stipend would be valued at $25,000 and $30,000 respectively.
