Toshaos from all the 10 administrative regions are expected to engage with private airline owners today at the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference to find a solution to the hike in air fare cost. This issue was highlighted by Toshao of Kamarang Village, Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven, Lemmel Thomas who lamented the struggles the indigenous peoples face when they have to transport goods into their villages.
“The only airlines that operate are the private ones and at the moment, to put one pound of an item cost $182, to travel, you pay for your body weight, and so the residents of that end will be looking forward to find out what the NTC has done,” Thomas explained. This, the Toshao posited has resulted in the increase in prices for goods causing strain for residents of Region Seven.
President Irfaan Ali in response to this issue, said he instructed the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar to summon a meeting with private airline owners to engage with the Toshaos today.
The meeting is geared at coming up with solutions to address the high cost of airfare.
“Because the government has removed every single thing that we can remove to assist them, so tomorrow we will meet them at 09:30 and at 10:00 we’ll invite them in the room with the toshaos,“ President Ali stated.
