Trial commences for men accused of trafficking $1.2M in cocaine
City Magistrate Rondel Weaver on Thursday commenced the trial against Ron Reid and Nigel Dundas, who were both charged with trafficking $1.2 million in cocaine.
At the commencement of the trial in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, two ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) provided evidence in the case.
The two accused were released on $300,000 bail, and the matter was adjourned to October 13, 2022. Attorneys-at-Law Bernard DaSilva and Everton Singh-Lammy are representing the duo.
In May, Reid and Dundas had denied the charge, which stated that on March 2, 2022, at Front Road, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, they had 1.084 kilograms of cocaine for trafficking.
On March 2, 2022, the duo was arrested at a West Ruimveldt house by ranks from CANU and was found wrapping pellets of suspected cocaine.
CANU had stated that Reid is no stranger to the agency. In fact, on March 2, 2015, Reid, along with his common-law wife, was arrested with 70 grams of cocaine for trafficking.
In 2017, CANU issued a wanted bulletin for Reid after his associate, Julius Watkins, was intercepted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, with 114 cocaine pellets he ingested.
Watkins subsequently pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in prison. The following day, Reid turned himself over to CANU.
