Two GDF ranks arrested with over 300 lbs of ganja
Two Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ranks were intercepted and arrested with 316 pounds of narcotics on Saturday night.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that at about 21:20h on Saturday, acting on information received, ranks from the Special Branch and other units converged on Mandela Avenue, near Space GYM.
There, they intercepted a Route 42 motor bus with registration plate number BTT 27 travelling south along Mandela Avenue.
The bus, driven by Edward McCalmont, a 40-year-old Corporal of the GDF attached to Camp Ayanganna and a resident of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was stopped.
Another GDF rank, John Johnson, a 24-year-old Lance Corporal attached to Base Camp Stephenson and a resident of Timehri, was in the front passenger seat.
The police informed them of the reason for the stop, based on intelligence suggesting they were trafficking narcotics.
A search of the vehicle, conducted in their presence, revealed 49 large bulky parcels wrapped in transparent plastic on the bus seats. Upon opening the parcels, police found a substantial quantity of cannabis.
The GDF ranks were promptly arrested, cautioned, and escorted to the East La Penitence Police Station, along with the bus and the cannabis. The soldiers remain in custody as the investigation continues.
This bust comes just over a week after two other GDF ranks – Staff Sergeant Adisa Higgins and Sergeant Clovis Sam – were arrested with 154 pounds of cannabis. They were charged and remanded to prison.
