Businessman Pooran Singh, who was arrested over the fatal shooting of a suspected thief at his Bladen Hall, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home, has been released on $1 million station bail.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Singh, 52, called ‘Navin,’ was granted bail and a file was sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Earlier in the day, the Police Force told media operatives that the 52-year-old businessman went to the Vigilance Police Station at about 02:30h on Sunday, December 01, 2024, and reported that he shot an individual who was stealing “goods” from him.

According to the law enforcement agency, emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were dispatched to the scene and pronounced the man, whose identity and address remain unknown, dead.

The body was later transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital. One day after the incident, the Force issued a notice seeking the public assistance in identifying the dead man.

However, details about the incident were not made available to the press until days later after a social media post accused Singh of shooting the man to death and bribing Police to cover it, backed by follow-up from the media.

Nevertheless, the Force claimed that Singh was immediately arrested after the incident, and his firearm was lodged as part of the ongoing investigation.
