The Ministry of Public Works on Wednesday signed a contract with RITES Limited for the supervision of the construction of the four-lane highway from Ogle, East Coast Demerara to Haags Bosch, Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

The contract totaling US$3.2 million will allow RITES Limited to supervise the construction of the new Ogle to Haags Bosch road linkage, which has a period of 24 months for construction to be completed.

The supervisory contract spans 34 months. RITES Limited, an Indian company, is a supervisory firm that specialises in the field of transport infrastructure.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar said Ashoka Buildcon and RITES Limited would be working together on this project.

“The construction company, Ashoka Buildcon, is important to the execution of the contract, but they can’t get any payment if the supervisory firm doesn’t sign off on it, so the supervisory firm is just as important as the construction contractor. They work hand in hand.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill told the contracting company that a team from the Ministry would also be supervising works on the project.

“Because they need to immediately oversee the removal of utiliites along the corridor to ensure that the civil works components can kick into gear. So rights would have to begin to provide that supervisory service to the various utilities to make sure we clear the carriageway.”

Ashoka Buildcon, the contracted company for the new highway construction, has already begun mobilising its equipment to commence construction of the new road linkage.
