Ganesh Rampersaud, a 52-year-old US-based Guyanese who is on vacation in Guyana, was arrested on Friday after he was found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm along with 10 matching rounds of ammunition.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that at about 21:00h, ranks acting on information received went to No. 58 Village, Corentyne, and made contact with Rampersaud, who is also known as ‘Shamie.’
He was told of the information received that he had in his possession a firearm and ammunition without a license.
Rampersaud, who had travelled from the United States on July 27, 2024, reportedly told the ranks, “I'm here on vacation, and I have a firearm to protect myself; I want to be honest. Let me show you.”
He then led the officers to a bedroom where he had his personal belongings and retrieved a black handgun with a magazine containing the ammunition.
