Vendor killed, five others injured after drive-by shooting on D’Urban Street

A 40-year-old vendor is now dead, while five others are nursing gunshot wounds following a drive-by shooting on D'Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, on Saturday.


Dead is Anthony Havescomes of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown. The incident occurred at approximately 05:45h at Lot 23 D’Urban Street, where an ‘All Black’ party had been hosted at V’s Flavour Delight.


According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the party, which had been ongoing for hours, was shut down by police around 05:00h.


A 37-year-old businessman who hosted the event stated that shortly after the police ended the party, he was cleaning up on the northern side of D’Urban Street when he heard a series of loud explosions.


Upon investigating the source, he witnessed a black motor car speeding west along D’Urban Street and saw several people bleeding from gunshot wounds.

The injured persons were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention.


Those injured are Travis Ceres, a 25-year-old vendor from East La Penitence, who suffered a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. Teon Allen, a 38-year-old unemployed man from Sophia, who was shot in the left shoulder. Stanley Matthews, a 31-year-old labourer from Sophia, sustained gunshot wounds to his left hand and thigh.


Furthermore, Destra Auther, a 33-year-old vendor from East La Penitence, was injured in her left leg. Additionally, Lenox Wayne, a 39-year-old security guard from Turkeyen, sustained gunshot wounds to his right thigh and hand.


Havescomes, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.


The police have since cordoned off the area and are conducting investigations into the shooting. No suspects have been arrested.
