Venezuelan motorcyclist killed, pillion rider hospitalised following collision
An accident at the intersection of Camp and Lamaha Streets, Georgetown, on Thursday night, claimed the life of 21-year-old Venezuelan national Luis Natera and left his pillion rider, 25-year-old Yohennis Moya, injured.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the accident occurred at about 20:53h.
It involved a motor car bearing registration number PAG 2470, driven by 19-year-old Cleveland Peters, and a motorcycle CM 8134, ridden by Natera.
Natera, who lived at Lot 92 Second Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was accompanied by Moya, who is also a Venezuelan national.
The Police report stated that the motor car was proceeding east along Lamaha Street at high speed while the motorcycle was travelling south along Camp Street.
At the intersection, the traffic light signal was in “flashing mode”—with the car’s light flashing red and the motorcycle’s light flashing amber.
According to the police, the driver of the motor car failed to stop and drove through the intersection, resulting in a collision with the motorcycle.
The force of the impact caused both Natera and Moya to be thrown into the air and land in an empty lot on the southeastern side of the intersection.
Natera was pronounced dead at the scene, while Moya, who remained conscious after the crash, was transported by ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is receiving treatment for her injuries.
The body of Natera is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police have since detained the motor car driver, who was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.
A breathalyser test was conducted on Peters, which revealed no trace of alcohol.
