Vergenoegen teen remanded over attempted murder of another teen
A 17-year-old from Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), was on Friday remanded to the Juvenile Holding Centre after he was slapped with an attempted murder charge.
The teen was brought before Magistrate Alisha George in the Leonora Magistrate’s Court. The charge relates to a stabbing incident that occurred on October 3, 2024, in Tuschen, EBE.
The juvenile, whose identity has not been released due to his age, was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to the Juvenile Holding Centre. The matter was adjourned to November 28, 2024, for further proceedings.
On the day of the incident, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the victim, a 17-year-old from Tuschen, was reportedly stabbed multiple times by the accused and another individual.
According to the police report, the victim and the two suspects were previously known to each other.
The victim had exited a minibus at Tuschen New Scheme, and the suspects followed him.
After fleeing into a nearby yard on Second Street in Tuschen, the victim was reportedly chased by the suspects, who then attacked him, inflicting several stab wounds before fleeing the scene.
The victim was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital in critical condition, where he was examined by a doctor before being transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he remains hospitalised.
In the aftermath of the attack, the second suspect involved in the incident was arrested and released on $200,000 bail. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further legal advice.
The second suspect denies the allegations, and his account was reportedly corroborated by the juvenile charged with the attempted murder.
The juvenile, however, maintains that he acted alone. The victim, on the other hand, claims that both suspects were involved in the stabbing.
