Vessel with sleeping crew crashes into Harbour Bridge; company to foot damages – Indar
A coastal vessel, with its crew reportedly asleep, collided with the Demerara Harbour Bridge early Tuesday morning, causing damages and a build-up of traffic.
During an interview with MTV News Update, Deodat Indar, the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, explained that the incident occurred around 05:00h.
“It was unanchored, somewhere in the vicinity of the sugar terminal area, and then it [vessel] drifted towards the Harbour Bridge,” Indar explained.
“My understanding from the reports is that the crew fell asleep, and when they were very close to the Harbour Bridge, they tried to recover from not hitting the Bridge, but they ended up hitting two anchors, and some other small damages were experienced.”
He added that the Coast Guard had taken command of the ship so that the authorities could recover the cost of the damages.
“They definitely have to pay back for it [damages],” the Minister concluded. The MV Princess Anisa vessel is registered with INS Shipping at Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
Last April, a tug and barge working on the new Demerara Harbour Bridge drifted into the existing structure.
