Wanted murder suspect shot following high-speed chase with Police
Quacy Jamal Craig, who was wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of Dexter Hersham, was arrested on Friday after he was shot following a high-speed chase with law enforcement officers.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that at about 22:45h, police officers on patrol stopped a black Allion motor car bearing registration number PAC 9713 near the Pegasus Hotel on Seawall Road, Kingston, Georgetown.
The vehicle was driven by Craig, a 36-year-old supervisor from West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown.
Craig’s 33-year-old reputed wife, Dane Wienzen, was also in the vehicle at the time. Upon stopping the car, a Sergeant informed Craig that he was wanted for questioning regarding the alleged murder of Hersham and subsequently arrested him.
According to the GFP, the vehicle was searched, but no items of evidential value were found. Following the arrest, the Sergeant instructed Craig to drive the motor car, with his reputed wife and another rank inside, to the Ruimveldt Police Station. Two additional ranks followed behind on motorcycles to ensure the safe transport of the suspect.
However, upon arrival in front of the Ruimveldt Police Station, Craig made a sudden left turn and sped off into Yarrow Dam, prompting a chase by the motorcycle ranks.
The murder suspect drove to a point where the vehicle could not go further, exited the car, and began to flee on foot in an eastern direction. He jumped several fences and ignored multiple calls from the pursuing ranks to stop, eventually jumping into a nearby trench.
One of the ranks, armed with a service pistol, discharged one round in Craig’s direction, hitting him on the buttocks. Craig was then apprehended and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor and admitted as a patient under police guard.
Hersham, a construction worker, was fatally shot on August 10, 2023, following a dispute over a house at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
