“We are not sparing any effort to get to the truth,” Vice President on State House shooting
Following Thursday’s shooting at State House, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has revealed that the government is sparing no effort to get the truth surrounding the incident.
Speaking on a Facebook live programme, the Vice President said an investigation is in full swing, examining several leads.
“We have to see if it is an isolated act or if it is a conspiracy, and therefore, the task force which is working on this will go through a number of leads that they have,” Dr. Jagdeo posited.
On Thursday at about 7:30h, pandemonium erupted at State House –President Irfaan Ali’s official residence – after a man identified as Ikena Chinezie approached the President’s security detail at the southeastern guard hut adjacent to Carmichael Street and stated: "I want the President.”
He drew a knife from the waist of his pants and stabbed Presidential Guard Telon Perreira five times before disarming another guard of his firearm.
After the suspect was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, there were concerns as to whether he was a Nigerian. This was after the President of the Nigerian Association, Dr. Nnamdi Elei, said that Chinezie was not a part of the Association or known by members.
But VP Jagdeo confirmed that he is a Nigerian national who came to Guyana on March 14, 2020.
“This incident would be one that hopefully would help enhance security arrangements across the country, particularly as it relates to the Head of State,” the VP shared, noting that the Ali-led Administration is known for its people-centric approach and is afraid that “excessive security” might be a barrier to communities.
It has been revealed that Chinezie was employed with a cleaning service company and, prior to that, worked at a security firm.
Today, the Guyana Police Force revealed that he is still on a ventilator at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
During his address to the Georgetown Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s 133 Annual Awards Presentation and Gala Dinner on Thursday night, President Irfaan Ali said his determination and will to serve Guyana had been strengthened after the incident.
The Head of State noted that these “incredible moments” in life allow one to reflect on humanity and human nature as a whole. Premised on this, he asked Guyanese to recommit themselves to serving the country.
