Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), retired Justice Claudette Singh, says the Commission “is very much on” for the hosting of Local Government Elections (LGE) this year.
Singh made this statement in response to questions about the likelihood of LGE being held this year. In fact, she said they are looking to host the elections at either the end of this year.
“We are very much on, we are looking at the end of November or December,” the GECOM Chairwoman told reporters.
Local Government Elections are hosted every three years, with the last one being in 2018. However, these polls were postponed last year due to GECOM’s lack of readiness.
One reason attributed to the delay was the fact that the position of a number of high-level officials, such as the Chief Elections Officer (CEO), was vacant.
The hosting of LGE depends on the readiness of GECOM, and the Minister responsible, Nigel Dharamlall, will then announce a date.
Minister Dharamlall, in a recent interview, had said the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) “is ready.”
Additionally, Singh noted that GECOM has just concluded its continuous registration and is now moving to have a preliminary list. They will then move to claims and objections. The continuous registration exercise seeks to ensure there is a clean voters list.
