“We will not be silenced,” says Mayor and Duncan after being released on bail

Mayor Ubraj Narine and Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Sherod Duncan were on Thursday released on bail after being slapped with charges of attempting to incite racial and ethnic disunity and cybercrime.

The defendants appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the charges were read to them.

The first charge alleged that the duo, on December 12, 2022, at New Market Street, transmitted a video attempting to excite racial division. They were not required to plead to this indictable charge.

The second charge alleged that Narine and Duncan, on the same date and location, attempted to incite racial hostility to a section of the public based on their race. They pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The men were released on $200,000 bail each, and as a condition of bail, they were to refrain from posting or airing any material relating to the incident pending the outcome of the case.

After appearing before the Chief Magistrate, the public figures were hauled before Magistrate Clive Nurse, where they were charged with two counts of obstructing traffic on the same date and location.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charges and were released on their own recognizance.

After their court appearance, the duo said, “we will not be silenced.” Several lawyers, including Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde and Darren Wade, represented them.
