Wife, mother-in-law in custody as manhunt for Lusignan Prison escapee intensifies
The search for convicted inmate Jose Awad is ongoing as authorities have arrested his wife and mother-in-law.
In a statement, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) said that the Officer-in-charge of Lusignan Prison confirmed that Awad contacted his wife after he managed to escape from his place of labour.
“The prison service and the police force, along with other members of the joint services, are actively working to recapture the inmate,” the statement said.
Awad escaped from the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Tuesday while labouring at the snackette in the compound of the Cecil Kilkenny Training School. The escape occurred around 13:00h, and Awad, who hails from Redlock Lima Sand, Essequibo, is serving two years for break-and-enter and simple larceny.
Prison authorities had said that the prisoner was left unsupervised for a short period of time when he made good his escape.
Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Awad is asked to contact the Officer-in-Charge at Lusignan Prison or the nearest police station. According to the GPS, the supervising officer was placed on close arrest, and an investigation was launched.
