Woman, 29, fatally stabbed by partner after leaving abusive relationship

A 29-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her estranged partner on Sunday after leaving their abusive relationship about two months ago.

Dead is Alexis Roxanne Harris, a farmer of Hill Foot, Linden Soesdyke Highway. The incident occurred around 12:20h at her sister’s residence in Free and Easy, West Bank Demerara (WBD).

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Harris, known as ‘Cullie,’ had recently moved out of the home she shared with her reputed husband, 35-year-old James Lord, following months of abuse.

Two months prior, Lord allegedly assaulted her and threatened to kill her, prompting Harris to relocate with their children to her sister’s home for safety.

On the day of the fatal incident, Lord visited the sister’s residence to see his children. While there, he reportedly became enraged when he saw Harris using her cell phone, snatching it from her and breaking it.

Harris then stepped outside to sit on the stairway, but Lord followed her, took out a knife from his haversack, and began stabbing the 29-year-old woman.

Lord’s nephew, Junior Lord, who was present at the time, attempted to intervene. In the process, he sustained a stab wound to his abdomen.

Despite the nephew’s efforts, James proceeded to attack Harris, fatally stabbing her in the left breast and right hand. Harris tried to flee but collapsed into a nearby drain, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Junior was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens and is in serious but stable condition.
