Woman arrested for attempting to smuggle sim card to son in Mazaruni Prison
A Britannia, West Coast Berbice (WCB) woman was caught attempting to smuggle a SIM card to her son, who is housed at the Mazaruni Prison.
Ingrid Mary Thomas, 55, was arrested Monday at the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) Headquarters.
At about 10:15h, after she arrived at the Prison Headquarters, the items she brought for her son, Bevon Thomas, were routinely searched.
Officers found a SIM card hidden in a toothpaste tube among the items. Thomas was arrested and handed over to the police. She will face the courts shortly.
The GPS urges civilians to recognise the grave risks associated with engaging in contraband trade within prison walls.
“Smuggling contraband into correctional facilities not only jeopardises the safety of inmates and officers but also undermines the integrity of the prison system,” the Prison Service noted in a statement.
“It must be noted that smuggling contraband into correctional facilities carries serious consequences,” the statement concluded.
