Woman fatally stabs reputed husband over rent owed

A 26-year-old labourer was on Tuesday fatally stabbed by his reputed wife over rent owed, according to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

Dead is Leroy Dey of Breda Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown. The murder occurred at about 23:20h on Tuesday, allegedly by Shaneiza Clarke, 30.

According to the GPF, the couple has been living together for about three years and would usually have misunderstandings, leading to fights.

However, at about 23:00h on Tuesday, Dey went home after he left four days ago, and they had an argument as to paying the landlord's rent.

A scuffle ensued between them, and Dey dealt Clarke a slap to her face, picked up a piece of wood, and dealt her several lashes about her body.

In retaliation, the suspect picked up a knife that was on the ground at the time and stabbed the victim in his chest.

The victim then left en route to the Stabroek Market area but collapsed while walking on Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, between Hadfield and Leopold Street.

An ambulance was summoned, and he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he underwent surgery but later succumbed.

The suspect later went to Brickdam Police Station to make a report, where she was arrested and later escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

She was examined and treated by a doctor and is in custody pending investigation. Dey’s body is at the GPH’s Mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination as the investigation continues.
