Zeelugt woman remanded over attempted murder of 9-year-old daughter
Bibi Fareena Joseph called ‘Christine,’ was on Thursday remanded to prison for allegedly attempting to murder her daughter.
The 33-year-old housewife was hauled before Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Leonora Magistrate Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
She was remanded to prison, and the case was adjourned to August 02, 2024, for report.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred on July 7 in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), around 22:00h.
Enquiries revealed that Joseph and her daughter lived together with her boyfriend. The child’s father passed away about four years ago, leaving Joseph as the sole caregiver.
On the night of the incident, a heated argument erupted between Joseph and her boyfriend. During the altercation, the boyfriend harshly declared that both Joseph and her daughter were “wastes” and that he did not want them in his life anymore. Following this, he left the house.
In a state of distress, Joseph reportedly called her daughter and told her that her father was already dead and that her stepfather no longer wanted them.
In a shocking turn of events, she allegedly took a ‘chopper’ and attacked her daughter, inflicting a wound on her left arm. The child managed to escape and sought refuge with a neighbour, who promptly took her to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
At the hospital, the girl was examined by a doctor, who listed her condition as stable. She was subsequently transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was admitted for further treatment.
Meanwhile, when Joseph was apprehended, she was found with a chop wound on her left arm, which she claimed was self-inflicted.
She was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for medical attention, where her condition was also deemed stable. After receiving treatment, she was discharged and charged.
